Tutti Frutti Artisan Gelato, Mornington by Benny

New Year’s Day saw us motoring down to Mornington. Sunny and warm, we had several objectives – one of which was to check out the gelato at Tutti Frutti Artisan Gelato. We discovered this little gem just over a year ago, and we were keen to see how it compared with our recent experiences in Sydney at Anita Gelato.

Cherry Bomb and Passionfruit

Something we hadn’t factored into our plans was the Picnic Car Display – Mornington was packed. Bumper-to-bumper classic cars crawling all the way down Main Street. Obviously a huge event, with hordes of people. Furthermore, hot day + crowds = big demand for gelato.

We joined the queue, and used our waiting time to map out our flavour combinations. The options are one scoop, two scoops or three scoops, served in waffle cones or cups, or you can go all out with a sundae. On our visit around two dozen different flavours were available, including both dairy and non-dairy choices.

Tutti Frutti is a family-run business, making all their own gelato, using local and seasonal ingredients.
Pistachio and Lime in da Coconut

I selected two scoops, in a waffle cone, of course. Pistachio and Lime in da Coconut. Bilby Blue went for Cherry Bomb (studded with choc pieces) and Passionfruit. The flavours were good – fresh and fruity – but didn’t quite have the over-the-top “wow” factor of Anita Gelato. The servings were of a more modest size than those of Anita – but still plenty big enough.

We also found that the gelato was very soft – it had started to drip even before we had paid.  Yes the day was quite warm, but the gelato should have held its shape a little longer.

It is clearly very popular – by the time we left, the queue was out the door and along the street.

Does Victoria play second fiddle to NSW in the Gelato stakes? Our mission is clear: expeditions to a Melbourne outlet of Gelato Messina and to Limonetto Gelati (at Docklands), sources of fond foodie memories. What other candidates should we check out? Post your recommendations in the comments below.

It’s a tough task, but someone has to do it.

Verdict

We liked it

Overall

The gelato is a great product, even though it is not quite up to the exceptionally high standard of Anita Gelato. We would happily return every time we visit Mornington.

Thanks for the recommendation Anon.

We will give it a try. Do you have a favourite flavour?

Davey Mac's has 20 flavours available. So my favourite flavours aren't always there, as he rotates them. I have had mandarine and you would swear you are eating one. I love Coconut Rough, Peanut Butter, Malt, Ferrero Rocher, I could go on and on :)

Sounds great! We asked some friends who live near Black Rock if they had tried Davy Macs and they confirmed it is pretty fantastic. A visit is planned for the near future.
