Danny's Kopitiam, Glen Waverley by Bureaucrat

A weekend ago, I co-opted the services of my family to haul my furniture from my parents' place to my home (heave ho!).  To thank them for their efforts, I took them to Danny's Kopitiam for dinner. DK used to be called Nudels and Wraps, but it is still run by the same people. I assume the change in name was to make more obvious to punters as to what cuisine it serves. Given its proximity to the station, I used to go to N&W for dinner after work.

Inside, it's clean and spacious. The service is very friendly, relaxed and family-like. When I was writing up this post, I googled DK's website. It turns out that there's more to DK than its unassuming suburban facade. According to its website:

"[Danny Ko] and his wife, Fee Hun are most well known for being the original owners and chefs at Penang Coffee House in Hawthorn for 17 years from the late 70s to the early 90s...He is regarded in Matt Preston's book, Cravat-a-Licious as being the pioneers that introduced authentic Malaysian spices and dishes to the Melbourne restaurant scene."

We ordered a number of dishes to share, including...


...roti with curry sauce for Bubba Chuck (who couldn't wait until I finished taking the photo to start eating).


...char kwei teoh. Good 'wok hei', good mix of seafood and not too oily.


...nasi goreng with beef curry. I didn't get to try this one, but everyone else seemed to have liked it.


...nasi lemak. Everyone liked this dish, the curry had a nice flavour, and Beaker practically ate all of the ikan bilis (fried anchovies and peanuts).


...combination hor fun. While the flavours were nice, it was a bit lacking in the hor fun department. It was mostly the sauce and some seafood and veg. We all thought this could have done with some more hor fun in the dish. As a result, we ordered two extra serves of roti to have with this dish. The roti was deliciously crispy.


...seafood mee goreng. I didn't try this dish, mainly because I'm not a fan of Hokkien noodles. People seemed to have liked it. There was a reasonable amount of seafood in it, but I still thought it was a bit pricey for $18.

Overall
For me, I like DK because it's a friendly, relaxed place to have a meal. There is another Malaysian place on the same strip, which I have tried. However, I prefer DK because it feels clean, spacious and relaxed.

Most of the prices are fairly reasonable. However, I thought one or two of the dishes were a bit pricey given the serve and the quantity of ingredients that were used. And I also detected a slight whiff of MSG in some of the dishes.

I wish DK was opened every day (it's only open Wednesday to Sunday; 11.00am - 2.30pm and 5.00pm - 8.30pm). Many atimes in the past have I wandered down for some Malaysian food and had to find another place to get my grub.

Danny kopitiam has the rudest, grumpiest boss I have ever come across. Even though food is not bad I will never return to Danny Kopitiam again. Their food cannot compensate for the bad manners of the boss!

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience there, Anon. We've been eating there for years now and the service has always been fine for us.
