Little Si Chuan Xiao Sichuan, Mauritius by Obelix

I have been told on good authority that Little Si Chuan ranks number one on Weibo if one was to search Chinese restaurants in Mauritius. And after visiting the Plaine Magnien edition, I could understand why. After stepping off a long haul flight, we were brought there supposedly for a quick dinner by friends due to its close proximity to the airport. Groggy from crossing all these time zones, eating was the last thing on my mind but Little Si Chuan soon revived me better than any shower or power nap.

Obviously by its name, Little Si Chuan does seafood Sichuan style. Whilst I normally steer clear of the hot heat and tongue numbing properties of Sichuan pepper, I was pleasantly surprised that the food at Little Si Chuan did not blow one’s head off and one could actually appreciate the flavours.

Little Si Chuan Xiao Sichuan, Mauritius, fish soup
The clear winner of the night was a fish soup made with grouper fish, mustard greens, tofu and vermicelli. It was light and nourishing. The mustard greens really stimulated my appetite.

Little Si Chuan Xiao Sichuan, Mauritius, sweet and sour fish
Another favourite was the sweet and sour fish with little goujons of fish with just a hint of sweetness and fresh pineapple.

We also ordered stir fried squid (see first pic) and a stir fried octopus. Both were very tender.

Little Si Chuan Xiao Sichuan, Mauritius, stir fried green beans
Stir fried beans satisfied the requirement for veggies.

Little Si Chuan Xiao Sichuan, Mauritius, prawn and vermicelli clay pot
I also enjoyed the prawns and mung bean noodles in a clay pot, full of umami flavours from the dried shrimp.

Little Si Chuan Xiao Sichuan, Mauritius, hot and sour seafood soup
We finished off with yet another soup, a hot and sour soup. Instead of the usual pork, this came studded with seafood fragments of mussels, dried oysters etc.

Overall

Little Si Chuan seafood restaurant serves up fresh local seafood with a Sichuan flare. It doesn’t have the scorching spiciness one would normally associate with typical Sichuan food, and I appreciate that as I can’t handle the heat but don’t want to skimp out on the flavour.
