I have fallen in love with the concept of an Onsen egg. A singular egg poached to perfection at 65 degrees Celsius. Tenderly wibbly-wobbly. A yolk-like custard. It was the sole reason why I decided to try OMI - for the Onsen egg.
Wibbly wobblies on a plate
But then, I was introduced to Mentaiko (fermented fish roe marinated in sake, konbu and yuzu) and I found myself obsessing over OMI since.
OMI is Japanese cuisine. I believe their signature is their Wagyu beef raised in Victoria and Tasmania. It is meltingly soft and when topped with a squirt of pink Mentaiko with an Onsen egg nestled alongside, it is a delicious umami trip.
A close contender for the ultimate umami trip, is their salmon with salted egg yolk. If the salted egg yolk bit sounds off putting, don't let it be. It adds another savoury dimension. It strangely gives it a Parmesan cheese flavour.
Their rice bowls comes with rice and the standard pickled vegetables and shelled edamame beans.
I wasn't so thrilled with their salted egg encrusted fries. For some reason, the fries were soggy, which was disappointing.
We also ordered a separate side of edamame but that wasn't really necessary given edamame came with the rice bowls.
Verdict
Overall
OMI is a good food court option - way more preferable than the usual lack lustre food court fare. I strongly recommend the Wagyu with Mentaiko.Find it at
