Docklands in July. Everyone knows what that means. Cold, bleak and windy. At least it wasn’t raining. So why were we there? Benny and I were working through our itinerary for Open House Melbourne and had just disembarked from a cruise of the docks, courtesy of the Port of Melbourne Authority. And our obvious next step – given our seaside holiday mood – was to indulge in some gelati. Regardless of the chilly conditions.
Summertime dreaming...with mango and pistachio gelato
Limonetto is housed in a little round building on Newquay Promenade. A building shaped just like a gelato cup. Incredibly, all the gelati is made in-house, in that tiny, tiny space. Plus Limonetto supplies its gelati to a number of restaurants, so it is open all-year round, irrespective of the weather.
Options for the gelato were ordinary cones, waffle cones or cups. Two flavours or three flavours. Take home packs (500ml or 1 litre) were also available. All the fruit flavours are fat-free.
As usual for our gelato taste tests, we each had two flavours in waffle cones.
We hadn’t visited Limonetto for a few years, but it was just as good as we remembered. My flavour choices were mango and pistachio. The mango was truly magnificent – just like eating the actual fruit. The pistachio was also really good – natural colour, and the nuttiness tasted super fresh. (see above pic)
Benny was in the mood for a more indulgent combination, and matched salted caramel with tiramisu. The salted caramel provided a great balance between the sweet caramel and the tang of the salt; and the tiramisu was a wonderfully creamy blend of coffee and chocolate, with just the right amount of bitterness from the coffee.
Verdict
Overall
Beautiful flavours – definitely one of our go-to gelato places in Melbourne.Find it at
