Vegie Mum, Doncaster East by Obelix

I can be a bit of pain to dine out with.  I generally steer towards pescatarian or vegetarian meals when out unless the providence of the animal can be vouched for.  So it was a relief to discover Vegie Mum and walk and know that I don't have to scrutinise the menu to choose amongst slim pickings.

I visited Vegie Mum on two separate occasions both to dine solo.  Each time I visited it was on a weekday and I was surprised to find largish tables (four or more diners) doing weekday lunch in a proper Lazy-Susan dining style, as in several communal dishes on the table being shared via a spin top table.  I was expecting solo lunch grabbers like myself but it was pleasant to see a dynamic atmosphere.

Vegie Mum, fried rice, vegetarian
On the first occasion I had their fried rice with egg, vegetarian of course ($8.50).  The serve size was reassuringly massive and came with their house made chilli sauce.  The rice itself featured a nice medley of greens and shroom all chopped up to match the little grains of rice.  It had good 'wok hai' and I was pleased that Vegie Mum, one can take home leftovers in a doggy bag as I sure did.  It was enough for dinner as well!  Good cheap eats.

Vegie Mum, vegetable stir fry
On the second occasion, I ordered their stir fried mix veggies ($11) with rice.  This came sauteed with oyster sauce.  It was comfort food for sure.  Filling and better for me than the usual lunch on the run.

Verdict

We loved it
We loved it.

Overall

It can be a bit tricky to find a family joint that caters for vegetarians.  Vegie Mum fits the bill and I didn't really miss the meat whatsoever.  With cheap and cheery service, a return visit is definitely on the cards.

I don't get out east very often, but I've had a couple of fun meals here! I enjoy going with a large group so that we can share a bunch of different things.

Another to try is Veggie Bowl on Springvale rd, near Forest Hill

I've been eyeing that... Worth a look in?

Definitely, kind of a cross between Vegie Hut and Vegie Mum. And very reasonably priced. I prefer it over Vegie Mum, but as for Hut, haven't been there in a few years, so can't comment. We had a big family (8+) dinner there, and they were accommodating as to getting food out to kids as priority over the rest of the table.

Take kiddo! They have laksa

Thank you! I'm going to give it a try! Kiddo has a new laksa source 😀

That's reassuring to hear about big family dining. It's always a bit tricky finding a suitable dinner place when my extended family dine (6 kids between us). I want speed, affordability & good food. Great little nugget of info. Thank u 🙏🏾

Not a problem, though laksa being veg may not be up to K's standard.

Ah that's a good point. Hopefully they stick some flavoursome prawn head into the broth 😉

I want to point out that the food here is actually made for Buddhists, in which certain ingredients are not permitted, like coriander, garlic, onions, etc. So it's good that they're able to still make the food tasty in other ways.

So if you've got Buddhist friends, you can bring them there.

Thanks for pointing that out Nean. It's fascinating how even without familiar seasonings, they can still make things taste great

I would prob postpone a visit to Veggie Bowl. We revisited and standards have dropped. Nean
