As with risotto, paella is a dish that often isn't as good as you'd hope it to be. The Lawyer is rather a fan of paella (we can still remember the magnificent squid ink paella that we had in Barcelona all those years ago), so when he saw it on the specials menu, he figured he'd give it a shot. Happily, this was a pretty good version of it. There was a good amount of chorizo and chicken and it was well seasoned. The rice was nicely done - not too mushy and not overly al dente.
I went for the grilled chicken burger. This was quite a generous burger. It was simple but done well. A whole chicken breast (including the chicken tender that was partially snaffled by Boy Chick - which is a compliment to the chef!) that was marinated in a light mustard sauce. It came with bacon, a goodly amount of mash avocado and fresh salad. It was all rather yummy but I didn't like the over-generous gloop of mass-produced aioli that was smeared onto the bun. And, as you can see from the photo, Boy Chick went straight for the wedges which came with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce.
Hoping to get some vitamins into Boy Chick, I ordered a berry smoothie. This was topped with chia, sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
The Lawyer got a latte.
Verdict
Overall
The Dark Horse on the Brit remains a very good cafe. Food is well made and as a parent with a young child, they definitely come up tops for a family-friendly cafe.Find it at
