Another unplanned Friday night dinner in Melbourne city. Ms Fancy Pants and I met after work, while Ms Green and Ms Black were travelling in from the burbs and weren't going to arrive til 6:30pm at the earliest. Ms Fancy Pants and I walked past our planned destination and wondered whether we could queue for the next hour for a table…. But it was cold and wet. We went to the food court and sat and googled places close by. Miss Katie's Crab Shack was just around the corner and I'd been keen to try since they used to be in Fitzroy.
Crab boil
They're located at Ding Dong Lounge - so it was up the stairs to a quirky, funky nautically themed bar. We easily got a table at 5:30pm and ordered ourselves a 2 for 1 cocktail!
I had the Corny Pop, spiced rum, apple juice, popcorn syrup, lime and a popcorn salt rim! It really was like drinking popcorn with that buttery salty tangy punch!
Ms Fancy Pants had the Crab Shack Bloody Mary! They were spectacular in their kitsch cuteness!
We decided we needed some snacks to keep us going so ordered the crispy fried school prawns - I love those crunchy little critters and they are perfect bar food!
When Ms Green and Ms Black joined us we had another round, and they added their Florodora, a flamingo adorned gin, raspberry, lime and ginger beer delight…. This may have turned into a jug!
The Jim Beam and jelly sour was also a hit!
We needed some food and there was plenty of fried alcohol soaking up options! I've always wanted to try fried green tomatoes! These came with goats curd and hot sauce and weren't bad… a little less fried batter would have made them even tastier.
The fries were good.
Hammer time!
Ms Fancy Pants had to try the boil - swimmer crab, potato, chorizo, butter, lemon and old bay (see first pic). She enjoyed it, especially cracking the crab legs with the hammer!! Food and entertainment in one!
Fried chicken with slaw or waffles
I wasn't in a hammer wielding mood, so like the others I ordered the fried chicken. I went for the fresh slaw with it, while Ms Black went the waffles and maple syrup and went went halves. The waffles were soft and fluffy and I loved them…. I just don't get the whole chicken and waffles but that's okay…. I devoured it like soft sweet syrupy bread! I love fried chicken…. the chicken here was juicy, but there was just too much fried coating for me…. So I peeled that off and ate the chicken. Maybe without the other fried food options it would have been more balanced.
When we were there there was an awesome DJ doing music bingo which was great fun and a nice side interest while we were eating, drinking and gossiping!

Disappointing that it wasn't a "really like". I've been itching to go to this place since they first opened, unfortunately children have a way of controlling your life!😘. Nean
Nean it was great for post work drinks- I think like you, I'd been waiting to go forever and had such high hopes for the chicken. And it was good, but not goooooooood!!! I think I've been spoilt on trips to the US! I'd still recommend going, when the kids are somewhere else, and enjoy those cocktails!!!
