The Brits aren't known for their culinary skills and imagination, but I am occasionally surprised when I do come across good food.
To celebrate my birthday earlier this year, we had afternoon tea at the Park Lane Hotel in Mayfair. It was definitely decadent, and the atmosphere was lovely (yes, the word "lovely" has crept into my vocabulary). Gorgeous decor, harpist and no riff raff.
Although the food looked slightly small on serving size, it did pack a punch, and towards the end we were struggling to finish - indeed, we didn't have dinner later that night.
On the menu was (per person):
- a choice of teas
- a savoury and plain scone each, with selection of jams and cream
- finger sandwiches
- two servings of cakes/pastries.
Overall
Arvo tea was definitely charming. A lovely (there's that word again) way to spend a rainy afternoon. The hotel didn't skimp on the art deco furnishings. If you want a touch of luxury (without being put on a 1-month plus waiting list and be required to wear a penguin suit) then this is the place to go.
