Whyte Kaffe Bar, Glenhuntly by Big Fil

Given this place is less than one minute walk from where I live, I can't believe it took me so long to try it out.

With good but not great food, Whyte's can claim to be the best cafe in the tri-suburb area (Glen Huntly/Ormond/Carnegie). Equally importantly, when it isn't completely full (when it can get a bit noisy) it's a well lit and comfortable spot to while away the time over a coffee and newspaper.

The best thing I've tried on the menu is the pancakes with maple syrup and strawberries. The size of the pancakes is very generous, the maple syrup and strawberries sweet. It would have been nice if the syrup could have been served on the side so you could adjust it to personal preferences, but this is a minor quibble.

The French Toast with bacon and maple syrup is also generous in size but not quite the same quality. The toast is thinner than I like it, resulting in the maple syrup turning it a little mushy. Again, this could be easily solved if the syrup was served on the side. The bacon itself is good, crispy and with just the right amount of fat.

The scrambled eggs with bacon on toast are ok but not as good as the pancakes or French Toast. The eggs are a little denser than I prefer, but I could be being a little picky as not many places seem to do them quite how I like it. Again, the bacon was good and well cooked.

Overall
A very good local café but not one to cross town for. Service is friendly but can be a bit inconsistent depending on who you get. One of the waitresses is very efficient, the others appeared to be new and/or inexperienced. The wooden floor boards also make it a bit noisy when full, which when I have been past is from around 10am till just after lunch.

Verdict
Ambience - 7.5
Service - 6.5
Food - 7.5
Price - 6.5
