We pre-ordered as time was tight. I experienced my first plate of gnocchi I actually enjoyed. I'm accustomed to firm and tasteless clods so was delighted when my entree of house made gnocchi were in fact tender light clouds of tato. It was served with ox tail ragu. Very rich and I know it's somewhat an odd word, but nourishing, was my take on this dish.
In the beef theme, my main was the slow braised ox cheek, mash, heirloom carrots and bourguignon sauce. Oh man! I was already a bit beefed out after my very filling ragu so this was pushing the boundaries of what I could fit into my stomach. The ox cheek was not one of the tenderest I have encountered. It wasn't hard but then again, I have experienced more melt in the mouth ox cheeks before. The mash was good ole fashioned comfort food and there was plenty of it. Overall not a bad dish but it couldn't beat the oxtail ragu!
Verdict
Overall
From my two course experience at Butcher's Bench, it seemed like it catered well for the carnivores among us. The setting was classic hotel restaurant type environs. Service was attentive.Find it at
