Elephant Corridor does a combination of Sri Lankan and North Indian cuisines. I had a lovely anniversary dinner there and I picked the location purely based on the warm ambiance and the evocative name which made me think of Rudyard Kipling. Elephant Corridor was decorated in muted earth tones with cosy flickering candlelight. It was perfect for date night even though we had the third wheel that was Kiddo in tow.
Vegetarian platter
We were given a serve of gratis pappadams with mint chutney and tamarind dipping sauce. The dipping sauces were plentiful and we had enough to also have it with our assorted vegetarian platter. (see first pic). This came with a whopping big samosa, two pakoras, two onion bhajas and two tandoori mushrooms on a sizzle plate. Kiddo bagged the samosa so I couldn't really comment on that other than to say that it was deemed edible as it was devoured rather quickly. The bhaja and pakora being deep fried were quite rich and filling. I enjoyed the tandoori mushrooms and were pleased there were more of those in the Royal Tandoor platter which we also ordered.
The Royal Tandoor was very substantial and I ended up taking most of it home for lunch the next day. It was the first time I have had a tandoor dish served on a sizzle plate. It was quite the novelty and smelt great as it spluttered away on our table. With four pieces each of chicken, fish (rock ling), prawn and mushrooms, it was ambitious to think we could have finished this in addition to the other dishes we ordered. P wanted me to mention how moist and succulent the chicken pieces were as we have had plenty of jerky-like chicken tandoor before.
We all concurred that the Sri Lankan style salt and pepper calamari was the highlight of the evening. These were so tender and perfectly crumbed. The salt and pepper mix was different to that of the Chinese style, more aromatic and less peppery. We got the entree size.
I regretted somewhat our other main dish, the vegetarian Kothu-roti only because it was a dry curry and we didn't have enough "sop" to mop with our rice and naan. It was a medley of vegetables mixed through shreds of roti and omelette. Very flavoursome and filling but perhaps not the best pick to have with rice.
Speaking of rice and...

...the naan.
Kiddo had a Sri Lankan lime juice to wash down her meal. It came with a little shot of sugar syrup for you to adjust the sweetness. She begrudgingly shared a bit with me.

So glad to hear you enjoyed it. We went for the Sunday crab lunch, and I loved it - now I have more ideas of things to try! Nean
ReplyDeleteHi Nean, I've been wanting to try the crab lunch! Pleased to hear u loved it. I've been also hankering to try their hoppers...ah, so much food, so little time! Lol!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. Have been on a Sri Lankan phase lately. There's also Candy'n Spice in Mont Albert, just make sure you specify spicy if wanted, as it is usually mild for the locals.
ReplyDeleteThat's going on the list for 2017! I've also heard Paradise in wheelers hill do an all you can eat Sri Lankan breakfast buffet. Will try and get there at some stage too. Happy eating!
