On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Benny and I found ourselves in Carlton, in search of a gelato treat. It was about time we checked out Casa del Gelato, last reviewed by Bureaucrat four years ago.
Casa del Gelato has been in Lygon Street for a long time – over 35 years. Bright and cheery, the large store has quite a retro feel.
All the gelato is made on the premises fresh each morning, using all natural ingredients. There were over 50 flavours, with dairy, sorbet and even soy milk options. The long counters with so many tubs of gelato were quite daunting when it came to selecting flavours – so much choice! Fortunately our friendly server offered tastings.
Coconut, baci and banana gelato
You can have cups (small, medium or large) or cones (single, double or waffle). Note that the waffle cone costs an extra dollar. Tubs to take home are also available – in sizes from 750ml to 5 litre (that’s a lot of gelato).
As usual for our taste test, we each had waffle cones. The standard Casa del Gelato serve includes three rather than the typical two flavours.
My selections were all dairy-free sorbets – pink grapefruit, mango and passionfruit. The pink grapefruit – one of my favourite fruits – was excellent. The passionfruit was fine, but the mango wasn’t nearly as intense, however both were a bit sweet for my taste. The serving size was extremely generous.
Benny was in the mood for creamy delights, and selected three of the dairy flavours – coconut, baci and banana (see first pic). While all three flavours were ok – a special mention for the coconut with slivers of real coconut flesh – as with my choices they were a bit sweet, and not as luxuriously creamy as he has come to expect since starting our gelato quest.
Verdict
We liked it.Overall
Casa del Gelato offers friendly service and generous servings. While the flavours were fine – we especially liked the pink grapefruit – overall the gelato tended to be a bit too sweet for our taste.Find it at
