Following an arvo of driving around and looking at properties (and getting queasy sitting in a seven seater people mover), we decided that an impromptu dinner was in order. Obelix has waxed lyrical about the fish and chips at Archie's, so we thought this was a good opportunity to try it out for ourselves.
Fish, fish and more fish!
Frequented by dedicated locals, Archie's does a very brisk trade. With a crowd to feed, we got a range of tasty fried things to share. The resounding feedback from all was that the seafood was very tasty and fresh; shellfish was plump and juicy; everything was nicely seasoned; and for fish and chips standards, it wasn't greasy.
Seafood pack with fish, calamari, scallops and prawns
Calamari and chips, with an obligatory/token salad (because that one small salad cancels out all the other cholesterol-laden calories!)
More fish, scallops and prawns
Grilled salmon
Grilled whiting (I think)
Grilled barra
Feeling the need to sample more than just the fishy items on the menu, I also ordered a beef souvlaki. And, boy, am I ever so glad that I did! The pan fried, marinated steak was absolutely delicious and the salad ingredients were fresh and squeaky. I also love the warmed pita bread that was delightfully doughy and yeasty (I dislike the really flat pita bread that have the texture of cardboard). I love this so much that I often stop by at Archie's to get it for lunch when I'm in the area.
Verdict
Overall
I can definitely see why Archie's is famous for their fish and chips. Definitely one of the best fish and chips (and souvs!) that I've eaten. Definitely a keeper, and it's definitely better than the usual suburban chippy.Find it at
