The Resident, Ashburton by Bureaucrat

The Resident is one of the more trendy new cafes popping up along High Street, Ashburton.  Having loved the food at Two Seeds (a few doors down from The Resident), I had high hopes for The Resident, which is situated near the bridge across Ashburton train station.

With high-gloss white walls, geometric tiling, pops of colour from the furniture and an enticing display of baked goodies, The Resident was primed to be a contender of 'favourite cafe' for me.  However, when the food arrived, it was clear to us that all that glitters is not gold.

The Resident, vegetarian, breakfast
Obelix had a choose-your-own breakfast dish, comprising of toasted sourdough bread, poached eggs, wilted spinach, pan fried mushrooms and topped with snow pea shoots.  She wasn't too impressed with it - as you could see in the pic, the pea shoots looked decidedly limp and she reported that the spinach was not washed properly as it was rather gritty.

The Resident, poached chicken salad
My poached chicken salad wasn't too impressive either.  It was obvious from the appearance and texture that the poached chicken has actually been twice-cooked/re-heated.  It was rather tough and dry for poached chicken.

The Resident, smashed avocado on toast
Bilby Blue's dish of smashed avo on toast with a green salad was possibly the best dish of the day, but that wasn't saying much.  It wasn't terribly memorable and I got the impression from her that it was rather ho-hum.

The Resident, chai
We also got some chai...

The Resident, soda
...and drinks to go with our meal.

The Resident, Ashburton

Overall

The Resident is a nice spot but it's a pity the food just doesn't quite make the cut.  If you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend you check out Two Seeds instead.

  2. Hi Miss SS, yup, The Resident needs to lift its game! It's shame, since it's located in such a great spot... oh the potential!

  3. I'm a local. It's interesting, because The Resident used to be fantastic. Seems to really have slipped in the last 12-24 months. I wonder if there's new management/chef?
Two Seeds is pretty good, but I've really been impressed with Oak Room of late...

    1. Hi Georgia
Thanks for reading. I've seen Oak Room and that looks good too. I think I've also spotted an Afghan restaurant that had recent opened in the area that looks interesting.
