A little while back, we were in Sassafras for a book fair. It was one of those extremely muggy days and feeling rather flat from the slim pickings at the book fair, we trudged along to Ripe for afternoon tea for a pick-me-up. I was with A & A and kiddo and between us, we shared a few cakes and chai lattes.
The cakes were of generous size and suited to sharing. The vanilla slice with the passion fruit topping was my favourite. The tartness of the passion fruit undercut the sweetness perfectly. The vanilla custard part was a lovely texture on the palate without being overly gelatinous.
The apple strudel was A's pick. It was ok. I've had better. I always find strudel is best served hot and my recollection was that this version was cold.
The lemon tart was suitably tangy. I'm not a big fan of lemon tart but if you like a tangy type of dessert. This would fit the bill.
Chai lattes
Verdict
We liked it.Overall
Ripe is a busy cafe with al fresco dining at both the front and rear. The outdoor sitting areas had a welcoming ambiance. I would like to return and have lunch there. The service was attentive and one of the waitresses was particularly kind to young kiddo and gave her a few chocolate buttons on the house as it was Halloween.
