Mr Hendricks, Balwyn by Bureaucrat

Thinking we'd get filthy rich, over a year ago, we started placing Google ads on our blog.  It'd be the perfect scheme: the blog would pay for itself, and in doing so, we'd get to dine out on the Googley profits.

The reality is that we earn peanuts each day from Google Inc.  So when we finally earned enough money for Google to post us a cheque, it was celebration time at Mr Hendricks, which is a place that Big Fil has had his eye on.

It's a typical breakfast-brunchy place.  Beaker ordered the crispy eggs, which came with sweet potato puree, ham hock, fennel, radish, red onion and candied walnuts.  The eggs looked delish, as they were crumbed and fried.

Big Fil went for a rather hearty option - the cassoulet.  A big plate of braised beans, smoked ham hock, lamb shoulder, Toulouse sausage, confit duck leg, persilade and a fried egg.  He licked the plate clean.

Snooze went for a classic - smashed avo and poached eggs on sourdough.  What made it special was the wakame, sesame, spring onion and pickled cucumber salad on top.

In my ongoing quest to find fritters that live up to expectations, I ordered the prawn and corn fritters.  These weren't exactly what I thought they'd be.  The fritters were much more burnished than I would have liked and each one only had a token piece of prawn in them.  All up, I think there would have been two medium-sized prawns in the dish.  The fritters came with avo puree, charred corn salsa and chilli jam.

Although we were all full, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to try a serve of Dr Marty's crumpets with lemon curd as a shared dessert.  Delish!

We also got some drinks, including chai, tea and a hot choc.

Verdict: we liked it a lot.

Overall
A nice brunchy sort of place.  Inside is a wee squishy and, if you can, you're better off sitting in the backyard section.  Service is friendly.

  1. Good to know about the outside area - if it looks too busy inside I'd be inclined to skip it if I didn't know there was more space! Also, crumbed and deep fried eggs... wow..

    1. The outside area looks much nicer, it's green and the tables are on different levels. And yep, I had a bit of food envy going when I saw the crumbed eggs!

  2. That's a shame your fritters weren't super impressive! I am also on the hunt for the perfect fritter..

    1. It's crazy that so many places can't get fritters right! Call me old fashioned but I think a fritter should be flat like a pancake and made with more veg than flour... Kinda like a rosti.

  3. Hmm, maybe try the Bubble and Squeak at Galleon in St Kilda then?
