Cafe Segovia, Melbourne CBD by Bureaucrat

In what appears to be an emerging trend for me, I am finding myself having breakfast/brunch more frequently.

In the past six months, I think I’ve had breakfast/brunch at a cafe about four times... this is four times more than I’ve ever had in my life to date.  In the coming weeks, there’ll be one or two more posts from me about breakfasts....so wait with bated breath!

On this occasion, the Lawyer and I were in the city on the weekend awaiting for an appointment.  This time, we picked Cafe Segovia, a cute cafe with lots of European charm, located in the ornate Block Arcade.

I really admired the curvy wooden architraves and the faded, gold-tinged mirrors and artwork inside.

While we waited for our breakfasts, we got a pot of earl grey tea and latte.  Both were good but nothing memorable.

The Lawyer got the Segovia breakfast, which is like a big breakfast.  He really enjoyed his meal, especially the golden pan-fried sausages (proper sausages with proper pork and no gristle and excess fat) and the crispy hash browns.  It was simple but the ingredients were good quality, including the chewy country bread.  Propz also for the non-greasy nature of the dish.

As I needed some greens in my diet, I went for the vegetarian breakfast.  This was a pretty tasty veggie breakfast - so much so that the Lawyer (who's a fairly committed carnivore) regretted not picking this himself.  I loved the fairly generous amount of fresh wilted spinach, the very nice half of avo (hidden under the spinach), the delectable pan fried potato chunks (with the lovely crispy bits) and the squidgy big brown mushrooms.  The tomatoes were deep in flavour, as was the tomato chutney.  Healthy, filling and virtuous!

Verdict
Food - 7.5
Ambiance - 8
Service - 7
Price - 7.5

Overall
A nice cafe.  I’m surprised to read the negative reviews on Urbanspoon.  Our experience was pretty good.  The food wasn’t fancy but it was simple and good.  Equally, the service was friendly and prompt.  No complaints from us - I'd go back again.
