I have a list of rainy day places, places near work that we have never visited but were saving up for a time when we couldn’t think of anywhere else. They vary from the obscure to the merely lesser known, well regarded or interesting places but not generally on most people’s radars. One of these was Naked Espresso Bar.
To be honest Naked Espresso Bar looks kind of ordinary from the outside. It’s small and homely and I’m sure that many people just walk past it on the way to larger and better known coffee houses. What you don’t get unless you enter is the causal, comfortable vibe, that all important personality that some places have and others just don’t.
As a group we are mainly about the food and not the coffee, although the reputation of the coffee here is good. The food is simple in style, a few pastries and in a tribute to childhood memories jaffles. These are a form of toasted sandwich, sealed around the outside to ensure that not of the goodness is wasted.
There appeared to be a series of regular jaffles plus one special guest each day. Consensus on the best was the turkey, filled with an almost molten cranberry sauce, with the spinach and feta and corned beef with pickle not far behind.
There’s nothing overly complicated about Naked Espresso Bar and if you are if you are looking for a coffee bar epiphany this isn’t really the place for it. For me it’s more like the coffee shop equivalent of the bar in Cheers, the friendly neighbourhood place where the staff know your name. And most of the time that’s what you want from your regular place.
Overall
Uncomplicated, comfortable, friendly.
