I’d been meaning to try Bing Boy on one of my several recent visits to Adelaide but never got around it. Now they've found their way to Melbourne, opening a new store in the Melbourne Central train station food court. I’ve already paid it a few visits but on this day I was determined to drag Snooze along to sample one of the newest additions to the Melbourne street food scene.
The concept is pretty simple. First of all take one thin wheat crepe. Crack an egg onto the crepe and lightly fry on the grill. Pass it onto the next person on the line who will add the filling, which has been assembled by one of the staff at the back of the shop. Wrap it all up so the it looks similar to a burrito and serve.
The simplicity of the process and its speed resembles an efficient factory line but it puts the fast into fast food. Tasty too and healthy feeling, and served with a smile by the friendly staff.
The ‘bings’ are apparently based on a Northern Chinese street snack and are a great combination of the soft texture of the crepe with the crunch of added crushed wonton pieces. The list of different varieties include bbq pork, duck and chicken, but for both Snooze and myself the best is the basic ‘Hey Bing Boy’. I think it's the extra texture provided by the shredded dried pork and the warming punch of the chilli sauce that lifts this to favourit.
One of the other bonuses of visiting here is just watching the staff perform. They are very busy at lunch times but great organisation ensures everyone gets their food within a few minutes.

Quick, filling, tasty and reasonably priced. Exactly what street style food should be.

We (Ms Counting her Calories and Iron Man (and Miss L) tried the Westfield one a week ago and had much the same reaction. We both liked the basic "Hey Bing Boy" the best! We went there for morning tea but only half joked about going back for lunch
ReplyDeleteThis post makes me so incredibly happy, as I LOVED eating jianbing when I was living in Beijing. It's food that you get from a street vendor, usually for breakfast, for around 4-5 RMB - inexpensive and tasty!
ReplyDeleteThe ones in Beijing don't have the fancy fillings in them though - just the egg, 3-4 types of sauces, crispy wonton skin type thing, pickled mustard greens, and spring onion.
