In-N-Out Burger is a chain with a large number of restaurants in California and smaller numbers in a few other western US states. It is known more widely for producing high quality burgers. We tried one of the restaurants in Marana, Arizona while driving between Phoenix and Tucson.
Unlike other chains which offer a wide range of products and special offers, In-N-Out offers a choice of a hamburger, a cheeseburger or a Double-Double, which features two hamburgers and two sets of cheese. A meal combining a burger, a small fries and a medium drink is assigned a number (1, 2 or 3). The only choice, for each, is whether to have onions or not. For drinks there is a choice of three types of milk shakes, soft drink, iced tea or coffee. Less familiar for Australia (and more common in the southern states) soft drinks are provided as a cup. The fountains are out in the store allowing customers to refill as often as they like.
Ms Counting her Calories, Miss L and I had eaten and enjoyed In-N-Out before. Iron Man ordered the Double-Double meal (No. 1) and Miss L and Ms. Counting her Calories were going to share a Double-Double as well.
The Double-Double is very tasty. The patty is not too thick and the cheese is tasty. The fries are crunchy. Everything tastes fresh unlike at other chains where different components can taste limp. Also, the hamburgers are sufficiently large without being too large.
Ms Counting her Calories was still hungry so she decided to try a hamburger as well (and she was so hungry that it was eaten before a photo can be taken). She liked the Hamburger even better than the Double-Double because she could taste the sauce to a greater extent.
Finally, the restaurant is bright and the staff (or associates) are usually cheery and enthusiastic. We also noticed in both bathrooms there were large signs on the mirrors reminding associates to wash their hands before returning to duty.
Overall
In-N-Out consistently makes tasty fresh burgers and nice fries – competitive with the best in Melbourne. Its range is more limited than some places in Melbourne but what it does it does very well.

ReplyDeleteThe secret menu is worth googling (there are a few item on their website, but look further). Neapolitan shake is great, and get the burger animal style.
