Although I'm back in Melbourne, I haven't resumed this ritual. Mainly because I'm trying to defy the natural aging process by restricting the amount of oily (and delicious) foods that I consume. But that's not to say that I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to pig out.
On a drizzly weekday morning, Mother Hen and I met at HKDS for breakfast. HKDS sells a variety of frozen dim sum, and also serves a selected range of yum cha dishes (for dine in or takeaway). I like HKDS because it allows me to satiate my occasional yum cha craving without the need to go actually go to yum cha - in particular, I can avoid the noisyness that's associated with yum cha and the potentially slow service.
For the dine in service, there is a list of about 20 dishes for you to select, including rice hot pots, congee and the usual dim sum dishes (eg prawn har gao, siu mai, etc). The dishes are made to order. For this morning, Mother Hen and I shared:
...pan fried turnip cake. An okay-ish effort. It was quite oily, and we had to blot the excess oil off the turnip cakes. Also, there was a smidge of MSG...tsk.
...deep fried dumpling. I actually don't know what these are called in English. But these are my favourite dumplings. It's an oval shape. It has a glutinous, chewy shell - the outer is crispy, the inside is chewy. Inside there is a savoury filling made up with mince pork and shiitake mushrooms.
...prawn cheung fun. Good sized prawns. Lovely, slippery noodles. Yum.

Overall
A quick and easy way to get yum cha in a hurry or as a takeaway. It's open from 9am onwards, and there is a fairly constant stream of people coming in to have a bite to eat or to get their food to go. There's complementary Chinese tea.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, Anon :)
ReplyDeleteI've made a point to look out for the English name - and most places seem to refer to it as 'combination deep fried dumpling'.
