Mr Foxx, Glen Iris by Benny

A spontaneous and genuinely friendly “welcome back” greets us as we are seated by our waitress, and this is only our second visit. Even though it is only a week after our first, it is little things like this that enrich a pleasant and memorable meal with friends, and enhances the already good impression we have of Mr Foxx.

Mr Foxx is a breakfast and lunch eatery that significantly raises the bar for innovative value-for-money daytime dining. The décor is difficult to categorise – a functional, almost industrial theme softened by the liberal use of natural timber finishes, with plenty of natural light made possible by large windows taking advantage of its corner location. There are plenty of outdoor tables, but Melbourne’s winter is still with us and indoors is far preferable.

The menu runs smoothly from breakfast to lunch, starting with upmarket variants of toast and cereal; moving to plenty of attractive-sounding brunch options such as a Spanish Egg Tortilla with smoked trout and potato; and fully embracing lunch with choices including the vegetarian Panzanella Salad or the Mr Foxx Beef Burger.

Over our two visits our lunch parties order the Mr Foxx Burger, Tempura soft shell crab burger, twice cooked pulled lamb, and chicken roulade.

Pulled lamb, red quinoa tabbouleh salad, baba ghanoush and minted yoghurt, Mr Foxx
The lamb is an absolute standout. A thin crisp pastry parcel is served with red quinoa tabbouleh salad, baba ghanoush and minted yoghurt. The salad is a lovely looking confection with a crunchy nutty element that appears to come from pieces of toasted almond. It tastes as good as it looks, and I haven’t even mentioned the lamb. The lamb is soft, juicy and full of flavour, no knife required.

The soft shell crab burger is pretty darned good – although I’m not completely convinced that the coleslaw with sriracha mayo provides the ideal companion as it threatens to overwhelm the more delicate crab.

chicken roulade, mr foxx
The Mr. Foxx Burger is pronounced as fine by our companion, and the chicken roulade is a great lunch dish – tender, perfectly cooked chicken over a puy lentil salad.

Verdict

We loved it

Overall

At $17 - $18 for each of these selections Mr Foxx represents excellent value for money. Yes, you can dine out for lunch much cheaper, but you will be hard pressed to get better and more imaginative.

  2. Laura, thanks for the comment. That Mr Foxx has maintained a high standard for a substantial period of time is admirable. If you find your way back there I'd be interested to hear whether you think Mr Foxx has got even better over the years.
